The sedimentary characteristics and palaeo-environment restoration of Wufeng-Longmaxi Formation shale, North Guizhou Pronvince

Paleozoic Wufeng-Longmaxi shale is one of the main layer for shale gas exploration in Sichuan Basin. In order to understand the sedimentary characteristics and hydrocarbon source rocks in sedimentary paleoenvironment of Wufeng-Longmaxi shale of Lower Paleozoic, northern of Guizhou Province, outcrop and core observation, thin sections, X-ray diffraction analysis and other means are used. The thickness of Wufeng-Longmaxi formation shale is generally large, ranging from 20mto200m, mainly develop in the deep water shelf. The TOC content is high, up to 5.75%. The mineral mainly compose of detrital quartz and clay minerals, also contains a little of plagioclase feldspar, potassium feldspar, calcite, dolomite and pyrite, in addition, the biologic microcrystalline quartz can also be found. Six lithofacies have been identified: siliceous shale, clay shale, calcareous shale, silty shale, carbonaceous shale, muddy siltstone. Through biological Ba, V / (V+ Ni), TOC, V/Cr, B, Sr/Ba and other indicators, we resume primary productivity, redox conditions and paleosalinity. The results show that early stage of Wufeng-Longmaxi formation has strong anoxic conditions, high paleosalinity and high TOC content. The anoxic environment is destroyed at the late of Wufeng-Longmaxi formation, with the TOC content decreased, is not conducive to high quality source rock formation. The organic pore acts as the key reservoir space in the shales, and the pores are mainly mesopose, with most of pore diameters less than 20nm. The siliceous shale has high TOC content and brittle mineral (quartz) content, which is the important exploration target for shale oil and gas exploration.
