TheWestPhilippinebasin(WPB)isacurrentlyinactivemarginalbasinbelongingtoPhilippineSeaplate,whichhasacomplexformationhistoryandvariouscruststructures.Basedongravity,magneticandseismicdata,thetectonicsinWestPhilippinebasinischaracterizedbyamagmaspreadingstageandstrikeslipfractures.NNEtrendingOkinawa-Luzonfracturezoneisalargefracturezonewithapparentgeomorphologyandshowsaright-handedmovement.Theresultsofjointgravity-magnetic-seismicinversionsuggestthattheOkinawa-Luzonfracturezonehasintensivedeformationandisatransformfault.WesternexistenceoftheNWtrendingfracturesunderRyukyuIslandsArcisthemaincauseofthedifferencesbetweensouthandnorthOkinawaTrough.TheUrdanetaplateauisnotaremainedarc,butremnantofmantleplumealthoughitslavachemistryissimilartooceanicislandbasalt(OIB).

InSouthChina,variousmegascopicsymmetricalmetazoanfossilswerefoundintheupperDoushantuo(陡山沱)FormationoftheNeoproterozoicEdiacaran.Theworm-likefossilischaracterizedbymoderntaxologicalannelid,formanymetameres,parapodia,onepossibletentale,analimentarycanal,andadorsalvessel.ThetriradiatediscoidalfossilsbelongtoTrilobozoa,andtheoctaradiatediscoidalfossilmightbeCtenophora.AllthesefossilsindicatethatthemegascopicmetazoanshaveappearedintheDoushantuoianofEidacaranandimplythatthesymmetricalmetazoansmusthaveoriginatedatleast550Maago.

TheLowerTriassicinChaohu(巢湖)area,Anhui(安徽)Province,China,iswelldevelopedanditssequenceistypicalinSouthChina.AfterabriefintroductionoftheInduan-OlenekianboundaryofChaohu,thisarticlepresentssomenewdataonconodonts.Morethantentimesofconodontsamplingsandinvestigationshaverecoveredthousandsofconodontspecimens,whichareespeciallyrichintheInduan-OlenekianboundarystrataattheWestPingdingshanSectioninChaohuCity,AnhuiProvince.ThemostdistinctiveformsaretheconodontsoftheNeospathodusdienerigroupandN.waagenigroup.ThefirstoccurrenceofN.waagenieowaageni,whichisregardedastheindicatoroftheInduan-Olenekianboundary,issituatedat40.49mabovethebaseofYinkeng(殷坑)Formation.Somekeyconodontsandsevennewspecimensareintroduced.

QuantitativeanalysisofradiolarianpreservationinsurfacesedimentsfromdifferentregionalenvironmentsoftheSouthChinaSea(SCS)isdiscussedinthisarticleforillustratingtheirrelationship.Theresultsshowthatspeciesdiversityandabundanceofradiolarianinthesurfacesedimentincreasewithwaterdepth,indicatingnoobviousdissolutionofradiolarianshellinthedeepSCS.Upwellingactivityandvolcaniceruptionarebothinfavorofradiolarianpropagation,andcausethesettlementenrichmentofradiolarianshell.Whereas,anabnormalreducedradiolarianfaunaindeeperslopesedimentmayresultfromtheremainofturbidflowthatbringssedimentsfromshallowarea,suchasshelfandupperslope.Radiolarianspeciesaremainlycomposedoftropic-subtropictypes,andincludesomecoldorpolarspecies,whichindicatesthatamistakeinpaleoceanographicanalysisshouldarisefromthemonospecificindex.However,synthesisradiolarianindexesinsedimentsmaywellrespondtotheecologicanddepositionalenvironmentsintheSCS.
Calculating Pollution Indices by Heavy Metals in Ecological Geochemistry Assessment and a Case Study in Parks of Beijing

Pollutionindexisapowerfultoolforecologicalgeochemistryassessment.Thecommonlyusedpollutionindicesbyheavymetalsinsoilsandsedimentswereclassifiedastwotypesofsingleindexandintegratedindexinanalgorithmpointofview.Foursingleindicesofcontaminationfactor(orconcentrationfactor),ecologicalriskfactor,enrichmentfactor,andindexofgeo-accumulationwereillustrated,andthereferencevaluesforcalculatingsingleindicesweredistinguishedintobackgroundlevelsandthresholdpollutionvalues.Eightintegratedindicesweredividedintotwogroups.Onegroupissuitableforthenormaldistributionsingleindicesincludingthesum,average,weightedaverage,vectormodulus,andNemerowpollutionindices,andtheotherforlog-normaldistributionincludingtheproduct,rootofproduct,andweightedpowerproductpollutionindices.Usingbackgroundlevelsasreferencevalues,fivecontaminationclassesweredivided,andtheterminologiesaresuggestedforthesingleandintegratedindicestounifytheassessmentresults.SoftwareofEGAPIwasdevelopedinasingledocumentinterfacetocalculatethefoursingleandeightintegratedindicesbyheavymetalstoassessthequalityofsoilandsedimentecologicalgeochemistry.PollutionindicesbyheavymetalsofCu,Pb,andZninsoilsinparksofBeijingwerecalculatedusingEGAPIsoftware,andthesefivecontaminationclassesandterminologiessuggestedinthisstudywereevaluatedandused.ResultsofintegratedindicesofCu,Pb,andZninsoilsindicatedthatthesoilqualitiesareunpollutedasawholeandvariedfromlowpollutedtounpollutedstatusfromthecentertotheoutskirtsofBeijingCity.

CurrentoilsaturationintheMoxizhuang(莫西庄)OilFieldincentralJunggar(准噶尔)basinwasevaluatedbylogginginterpretationandmeasuredoncoresamples,andthepaleo-oilsaturationinboththepayzonesandwaterzoneswasinvestigatedbygrain-containing-oilinclusion(GOI)analysis.Thepayzonesinthisfieldhavelowoilsaturationanddisplaylowresistivityandsmallcontrastbetweenpayzonesandwaterzones,andareclassifiedaslow-porosity,lowoilsaturation,andlowresistivityreservoirs.Boththecurrentlowoil-saturationpayzonesandthewaterzonesabove4365mhavehighGOIvalues(upto38%),suggestinghighpaleo-oilsaturation.Thesignificantdifferencebetweencurrentoilsaturationfrombothlogginginterpretationandcoresamplemeasurementandpaleo-oilsaturationindicatedbyGOIanalysissuggeststhatthislowoil-saturationfieldevolvedfromahighoil-saturationpool.Lateralre-migrationandspillofformallytrappedoilowingtochangesinstructuralconfigurationsinceNeogenewasthemostplausiblemechanismforoillossintheMoxizhuangOilField.Thecombinedeffectsofdifferentialaccumulationinthechargephaseandthedifferentialre-migrationandspillofaccumulatedoilinNeogeneareresponsibleforthecomplicatedcorrelationbetweenresidualoilsaturationandporosity/permeabilityofthereservoirsandstonesandthedistributionoflowoil-saturationpayzonesandpaleo-oilzones(currentwaterzones).

ThisstudywasconductedtodistinguishthecompositionsandprovenanceofsandstonesandsiltstonesintheEk1–Es3membersofHuimin(惠民)depression.Thesampleshavebeenanalyzedforpetrographic,majorelementandselectedtraceelementcompositions(includingREE).TheresultsshowthatthesandstonesfromthefirstmemberofKongdian(孔店)Formation(Ek1)havehigherquartzcompositionsthanthosefromthefourthmember(Es4)andthethirdmember(Es3)ofShahejie(沙河街)Formation.Thealkalifeldspar/plagioclaseratiointheA-CN-KdiagramsdecreasesintheorderEk1>Es4>Es3,whichsuggeststhattheEk1memberhadamorealkalifeldspar-richgranitoidsourceandmoreintenseweatheringofthesourcethantheEs4andEs3members.ThemineraldistributionsintheA-CN-KdiagramsalsoindicatethatthesandstonesandsiltstonesinthethreemembersunderwentK-metasomatism.Extrapolationofthesandstonesandsiltstonesbacktotheplagioclase-alkalifeldsparlineintheA-CN-Kdiagramsuggestsahighaverageplagioclasetoalkalifeldsparratiointheprovenance(tonalitetogranite).Inaddition,thechemicalindexofweathering(CIW)andchemicalindexofalteration(CIA)parametersofthesandstonesandsiltstonessuggestthattheweatheringofthefirstcyclematerialwasintense,andtheCIWdecreasesintheorderEk1>Es4>Es3.Traceelementratiossuggestallthesedimentaryrocksweremostlyderivedfromgranitoids.Elementalratioplots(e.g.,Th/Scvs.Eu/Eu*)ofsandstonesandsiltstonessuggestamixofagranodiorite-tonalitesourceasasourceofthesandstonesandsiltstones.ThesandstonesandsiltstonesofEs3andEs4membersalsocontainhigherEu/Eu*andlowerTh/ScratiosthanthesandstonesandsiltstonesofEk1member.Asisconsistentwiththepetrography,itsuggeststhatthesandstonesandsiltstonesofEs3andEs4membersarederivedfromasourcewithlessgraniteandmoregranodiorite-tonalitethanthesandstonesandsiltstonesofEk1member.

Greatchange,associatedwithglobalwarming,hasoccurredattheHailuogou(海螺沟)glacier,Mt.Gongga(贡嘎),China,sincetheearly20thcentury.Variousdataindicatethattheglacierhasretreated1822minthepast106years,withanannualmeanretreatof17.2m,andthefrontelevationhasrisenby300msince1823.ComparisonofglaciervariationsandtemperaturefluctuationsinChinaandtheNorthernHemisphere,overthelast100years,indicatesthatglacierretreatstagesoccurredduringthewarmphase,andviceversa.Massbalancerecordsduring1959/60-2003/04haveshownthattheglacierhassufferedaconstantmasslossofsnowandice.Theaccumulatedmassbalance,?10.83mwaterequivalent,indicatesanannualmeanvalueof-0.24mwaterequivalent.Thecorrelationbetweenthemassbalanceandtemperatureissignificant,whichalsoindicatesthatclimatewarmingisthecrucialcauseofglacierloss.Localhydrologicalandclimaticdatademonstratethatrunofffromtheglacierhasbeenincreasingbothseasonallyandannually.Thecorrelationanalysisandtrendanalysisindicatethaticeandsnowmeltedwateristhemaincauseofanincreaseintherunoff.Astheclimatehasbecomewarmer,changesintheglaciersurfacemorphologyhaveobviouslyoccurred.Theseincludeadecreaseinglacierthickness,enlargementofglacialcaves,andreductionofthesizeofcleftsontheglaciersurface.Theablationperiodhaslengthenedandtheablationareahasexpanded.AvarietyoffactorsthusprovideevidencethattheHailuogouglacierhasufferedarapidlossofsnowandiceasaresultofclimaticwarming.
Investigation of Curie Point Depth in Sulu Ultrahigh-Pressure Metamorphic Belt, Eastern China

TheCuriepointdepthofcontinentalcrustcanreflecttheregionaltectonicpatternandgeothermalstructures.AnalysisofmagnetismisanefficientwaytoobtaintheCuriepointdepthonaregionalscale.ThisstudysystematicallyinvestigatedtheCuriepointdepthofSulu(苏鲁)ultrahighpressure(UHP)metamorphicbelt(33°40′Nto36°20′Nand118°Eto120°E,ca.60000km2),easternChinausingaeromagneticdata.TheresultsshowthattheCuriepointdepthoftheSuluregionvariesfrom18.5to27km.TheshallowestCuriepointdepth(ca.18.5km)islocatedinSubei(苏北)subsidence,wheretheestimatedtemperaturegradientvalueisabout31.35℃/km,whichiscomparablewiththemeasuredvalueof30℃/km.Inaddition,atwo-dimensionalnumericalsolutionoftheheatconductionwasusedtocalculatethetemperaturefieldtoadepthof30kmalongtheprofilefromTancheng(郯城)toLianshui(涟水)withalengthof139km.ThesteadystatemodelsolvedusingthefiniteelementmethodshowsthatthetemperaturearoundtheCuriepointdepthisabout585.36℃,whichisclosetotheCurietemperature(580℃)ofmagnetiteatatmosphericpressure.TheseresultsprovidenewinsightsintothetectonicandcontinuousthermalstructuresoftheSuluUHPmetamorphicbelt.

Thisarticlefocusesontheprocessofrockcreepdamageandmicro-damageevolutionpropertiesofgraygreenmudstoneunderimpactingdisturbanceloadconditionsforthefirsttimeusingtherealtimecomputerizedtomography(CT)testingtechnique.Theresultsindicatethataxialloadcomesintolimitstrengthneighborhood,rockmicro-cracklinksintolargercrack,creeprateincreasesinashorttime,largerplasticdeformationhappens;thisiscalleddisturbanceacceleratingcreepstage.Whenrockiswithinlimitstrengthneighborhood,thereoccurscreepmicro-damageundersmallerdisturbanceload.Whendisturbanceloadislarger,rockdirectlyentersintodisturbanceacceleratingcreepstage,failureoccursinstantaneously.Onthebasisofexperimentalresearch,theCTscanningmethodwasusedtodescribethecreepmicro-damageofsoftrock,alsohelpfulinthepredictionofroadways’servicelifeandevaluationofgeotechnicalengineeringstability.

Theengineeringcharacteristicsofweatheredsoftrockareimportantcontentsofsoftrockmechanics.Theyalsoplayasignificantroleincompactingdeformation,whichhasbeenknowntoexertasignificantamountofinfluenceonthestabilityofhighwayfillingsubgradeengineering.Inanefforttoinvestigatethisaspectoftheproblem,compactingtestsandunconfinedcompressivestrengthtestshavebeencarriedoutonweatheredargillaceousslateandpeliticsiltstonerocks,whicharebrokenandgradedbeforethetest.Thetestingresultsindicatethattherelationshipsofbothbetweenstressandstrainandbetweenaxialstrainandtangentmodulusareexponentialrelationships;thesizeofthegrainplayssomeinfluenceonthedeformationmodulus,whereasthewatercontentimpactsthecompressivestrengthgreatly,whichshowsquadraticfunction;theunconfinedcompressivestrengthislinearwiththedrydensityofloosesoftrockmixtures.Therefore,thewatercontentmustbecontrolledinboththedesignandtheconstructionofsubgradeengineeringofsoftrockfilling,andatthesametimesomeeffectivemeasuresshouldbetakentoreachtherequirementofcompaction.
