  • The early Cambrian Bayangol Formation of Mongolia preserves small shelly fossils in which primary calcareous shells coexist with secondary phosphatic phases—a combination exceptional among known deposits. What mechanism accounts for this exceptional preservation has remained unknown. Here we show, using correlated SEM, EDS, FIB, and STEM analyses, that the Bayangol shells retain original foliated calcite microstructures in situ, and that the encasing phosphatic layers exhibit a five-lamella ultrastructure that replicates this primary fabric. Elemental mapping reveals concentric Fe-P-Si co-enrichment with authigenic pyrite at the shell interface. We propose that this geochemical fingerprint records an iron shuttle-coupled microbial mechanism: Fe(III) oxides scavenged phosphate and silica from the water column and delivered them to the sediment, where iron-reducing bacteria (IRB) on shell surfaces liberated the adsorbed P and Si, driving rapid, localized apatite precipitation that outpaced shell dissolution, while the Fe(II) diffused upward and was re-oxidized to fresh Fe(III) oxides. This mechanism required redox-stratified conditions that waned after the early Cambrian, explaining the post-Cambrian scarcity of such exceptionally preserved shells.
